1. Elon Musk’s xAI Reveal Open-sourced Grok-1 Officially
Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) company, xAI, has announced the open-sourcing of its Grok language model. Musk had revealed the company’s plan to do so a week ago. The official announcement of the release of the language model was made on Sunday through a post on the company’s website.
“We are releasing the base model weights and network architecture of Grok-1, our large language model,” xAI writes in the post. “Grok-1 is a 314 billion parameter Mixture-of-Experts model trained from scratch by xAI.”
“This is the raw base model checkpoint from the Grok-1 pre-training phase, which concluded in October 2023,” xAI adds. “This means that the model is not fine-tuned for any specific application, such as dialogue.”
2. OpenAI to Unleash Sora, Its Powerful Text-to-Video Generator, to the Public in 2024
OpenAI’s CTO, Mira Murati, has announced that the company plans to launch its latest creation, a text-to-video generator named Sora, to the public later this year. Initially, Sora will only be available to select creatives. This AI-powered tool can produce highly realistic videos from text prompts and will soon add audio integration and editing tools. OpenAI aims to offer Sora at a similar price to its text-to-image model, DALL-E, despite higher operational costs.
3. Figure AI’s New Robot Showcases Real-Time Conversation Capabilities Using OpenAI’s Generative Technology
Figure AI, a robotics startup, released a video update last Wednesday showcasing its Figure 01 robot conversing in real-time. The company mentioned that this was only made possible due to using OpenAI’s generative AI technology.
In the video, Figure 01 can be seen interacting with Corey Lynch, the Senior AI Engineer of the company. Lynch guides the robot through a series of tasks in a makeshift kitchen.
4. Pika Labs Unveils Innovative Feature for Text-Prompted Sound Effects in Generative AI Videos
Pika Labs has recently introduced a new feature that allows users to generate sound effects from a text prompt for their generative AI videos.
With this feature, users can now easily add sound effects such as bacon sizzling, lions roaring, or footsteps to their videos, making them more engaging and realistic.

5. Waymo Gets Green Light to Expand Robotaxi Services in California Amid Regulatory Challenges and Safety Concerns
Alphabet Inc.’s self-driving car unit, Waymo, has been granted permission by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to expand its robotaxi services in California.
The expansion allows Waymo’s autonomous taxis to operate in more areas of Los Angeles and the San Francisco Peninsula, including near Tesla’s Palo Alto engineering headquarters in San Mateo County. The approval comes at a time when autonomous vehicle companies are facing safety concerns and regulatory challenges.
6. EU Passed The AI Act: A Potential Global Standard for AI Governance
The European Union has passed a groundbreaking law aimed at regulating the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The EU AI Act has been designed to establish a set of rules that will apply to high-risk AI applications, ensuring that they are safe and do not violate fundamental human rights. To achieve this, the Act categorizes AI into different risk levels and will be implemented in several stages, starting in 2025. Experts predict that this move could set a global standard for AI governance.
